God, hear my cry; pay attention to my prayer. I call to you from the ends of the earth when my heart is without strength. Lead me to a rock that is high above me, for you have been a refuge for me, a strong tower in the face of the enemy. I will dwell in your tent forever and take refuge under the shelter of your wings. 61:1-4

Like the rest of us, David realized he couldn’t do everything on his own and he couldn’t save himself. There comes a time in your life when you come to the end of yourself, the end of your strength, the end of your own rope. It is at that time that you finally recognize what has been true all along; you don’t have what it takes… only He does. I praise God for the times when He let me get to rock bottom so that I would finally look up to the “Rock that is high above me.” This has pretty much been the story of my life and likely the story of your life too.

Look at all the metaphors (or are they similes, I can never remember 😊) for God. He is the rock who is high above us. He is our refuge. He is a strong tower in the face of the enemy. We dwell with Him in His tent and we shelter under His wings like chicks under the wings of a mother hen. In all these examples God is big enough to protect us, big enough to save us and bigger than our biggest problems. No matter what we face, nothing surprises Him and nothing is too great for Him. Why would we worry, and why would we try to face our mountains alone when our God is bigger than the mountain?
