Lord, my heart is not proud; my eyes are not haughty. I do not get involved with things too great or too wondrous for me. Instead, I have calmed and quieted my soul like a weaned child with its mother; my soul is like a weaned child. Israel, put your hope in the Lord, both now and forever. (131)
Oh, how this little psalm ministers to my soul. It isn’t discouraging deep thought or meditation on the wonders of God. There is nothing wrong with deep thinking, planning, and hard work. It isn’t encouraging childlike ignorance either—on the contrary, it is encouraging childlike trust. Let’s face it, sometimes the pressure of life and the burden of our dreams becomes too much for us. Yes, we should attempt great things for God and yes, we should stretch our imaginations. But, there comes a time when we realize that ultimately He is in control and everything is in His hands. The day you realize that is the best day of your life.
Instead of worrying about all the incessant problems of life or wracking your brain to figure a way out of your predicament, it is best to just calm and quiet your soul as a child does with its mother. I love to watch my grandson and see how content he is when he is in his mother’s arms. He tends to just lay his head on her shoulder and know that everything is going to be okay. When was the last time you did that? When was the last time you crawled up into God’s lap, lay your head on His shoulder and let Him just sing over you? When life becomes too much to think about, it is a healthy thing to get alone with Him, close your eyes, and remember who is in charge. He’s got this (and so much more). Put your hope in the Lord, both now and forever.
