Doubt is a clever and subtle temptation. We are rarely tempted to brazenly reject God or place our faith in something or someone else. Instead, we are typically tempted to divide our affections and hedge our bets. We don’t let go of God, but just in case, we also cling to other sources of comfort and other saviors. We say we trust in God, but we also secretly feel comforted by the balance in our bank accounts or the contingency plans we have made in case things go wrong. This was not David’s perspective in Psalm 62. He says, “Rest in God alone, my soul, for my hope comes from Him. He alone is my rock and my salvation.” (vs. 1-2, 5) As evangelicals, we realize that salvation is by God’s grace through faith alone and not by our works. It is an insipient false gospel that tells you it is grace plus works. Yet, there is another subtle trap we often fall into. We know that, yes, our salvation is found in Christ alone, but maybe the rest is all up to me. Let me remind you today that the same grace that saves you is the same grace that sustains you day to day, and it is not of yourself but a gift from God. This doesn’t mean we are not accountable for our actions. It is simply a recognition of what David also says in vs. 11, “Strength belongs to God.” You can’t live this life in your own power. Only the indwelling and merciful power of the Holy Spirit can sustain you, keep you, and make you grow. Trust in Him alone and reject all other comforts and saviors.
