The Lord is great and is highly praised; his greatness is unsearchable. One generation will declare your works to the next and will proclaim your mighty acts. I will speak of your splendor and glorious majesty and your wondrous works. They will proclaim the power of your awe-inspiring acts, and I will declare your greatness. They will give a testimony of your great goodness and will joyfully sing of your righteousness. (145:3-7)
If you want to know what we will spend our time doing throughout all of eternity, I believe that verse 3 gives us a clue. His greatness is “unsearchable.” I don’t think we will spend eternity floating on clouds and playing harps but we will spend the rest of “forever” learning more and more about the greatness of God. Life is a wonderful mystery where we walk with Him and get to know Him more intimately as time goes by. This growing, sanctification process is one of the great gifts that God gives us in life. While we will be fully sanctified in Heaven, we will spend eternity unraveling all the unsearchable greatness of our God and King.
While this will be the focus of our future, it has also been the thrust of history (I love how that is spelled “his” story). David says one generation declares God’s works to the next. We also get the privilege of proclaiming His mighty acts to the next generation that comes. Notice the back and forth between “I and they.” I will speak of your glorious majesty… they will proclaim the power of your acts… I will declare your greatness. All of creation and all believers throughout history have been playing their part and proclaiming the majesty of our God. However, it is not their work alone; it is our work too. Have you declared His greatness to the next generation? Are you testifying to His goodness and joyfully singing of His righteousness? You have a part to play in the symphony of praise at this point in “History,” just as you will have a part to play at the end of all things as you enjoy Him for eternity.
