He determines the number of the stars; he gives to all of them their names. Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure. The Lord lifts up the humble; he casts the wicked to the ground. Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving; make melody to our God on the lyre! He covers the heavens with clouds; he prepares rain for the earth; he makes grass grow on the hills. He gives to the beasts their food, and to the young ravens that cry. (4-9)
This psalm highlights the transcendence of God. There is no aspect of God’s nature more Godlike than His transcendence. He is wholly other and outside of our comprehension, yet He chooses to reveal Himself to us. Most who believe in Him agree that He is all-powerful and all-knowing. Yet, the all-knowing, all-powerful God is so transcendent that He even cares about the most minute details. This alone should let you know that He is not the fabrication of human imagination. Of course, we as individuals understand some details of life, and we can fathom a God with supernatural powers. However, no human could fabricate a God who simultaneously creates all the stars with a word, and yet is so intimately detailed that He sees each and names them all.
Consider the concept of infinity. Science tells us that outer space is infinite in its vastness, and yet outer space is not infinite to God because He knows every star by name. Not only does He infinitely know everything on the macro level, but even at the most microscopic level. No man-made religion can imagine a God like this. Fabricated religions tend to make their gods in their own image or in an image they can comprehend. Our God stands above us all, and truly, He is the only thing in the Universe that is infinite and beyond comprehension. Space might be infinite to us, but it can be measured by Him. His power and His understanding, though, are beyond measure. Unimaginably, the being who is truly infinite is also concerned with the finite. He lifts up the humble, He makes the grass grow, and He feeds the wild animals. No other word besides transcendence will do, and no other being is worthy of worship except our transcendent God.
