Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. (vs. 25-26)
Many people think that religion is a vital part of our life. Basically, they compartmentalize their lives and then give a portion of their time, heart, and attention to spiritual things. For many, that is a normal way to think. Some would even say it is a particularly pious way to think. Yet, the Psalmist clarifies that our devotion to God is not mere religion; the correct attitude towards God is more like a relationship. In that relationship, He is everything, and our lives revolve around Him. That doesn’t make you an oddball; that is a believer’s normal, expected posture in Jesus Christ. He is number one in everything.
Christ should consume our thoughts; He should occupy first place and be preeminent in all things in our lives. Who do we have in heaven but Him? After all, that is the purpose of Heaven, not sitting on clouds playing a harp but growing steadily deeper in our love and relationship with Him throughout eternity. What is there to desire on earth besides Him? He is the greatest treasure we can ever find, and it is normal for a child of God to talk to Him, meditate on Him, and revolve our lives around Him. The Bible says that God is the strength (literally in Hebrew, the rock) of the believer, and He is your portion forever. Incredibly, the Psalmist is saying that God is the reward! We think about receiving rewards in heaven, but in reality, if you are in Christ today, you have already won the reward! The victory is already yours; you already have the reward of eternal life… the reward of knowing Him and being loved by Him. Don’t wait until later to start enjoying that reward. Live the normal Christian life and be consumed with Him even now!
